SEGATO PROCESS
European mummification process
This piece represents the moment when you are no longer who you once were, yet still do not know what you are about to become. The hands operate as alchemical agents: they contain, sustain and transform. The box functions as an athanor, a sealed space where matter dissolves, infiltrates itself and becomes reconfigured. The reference to Segato’s mummification process does not point toward death, but toward the suspension of the natural cycle of degradation: the skin, tissues and collagen do not disappear, but transmute into an internal map of the body, a geography of memory. Through this process, the human ceases to be organic and becomes archive, a stable form of knowledge. What is transformed does not vanish; it remains in a form that time can no longer erode.
HISTORICAL
Spontaneous mummification process.
The seta (fungus) whose hyphae invade viscera, heart, and lungs, leaving the form of the body intact.
The skin becomes parchment-like and begins to resemble yellowish ivory and reddish hues, while the presence of hair and traces of body hair remain visible upon the epidermis.
